Camp Glen Gray Work Days |
Work days (also called Beaver Days) are when volunteers descend on camp to build, fix, paint, rewire, dig, reroof and generally make our camp work better and look better. Whatever your skills are or even if you can only bring enthusiasm to the camp, we need your help. We always have experienced project leaders that can show you what to do - learn new skills and help the camp at the same time.
To join us, simply contact the camp by phone at (201) 327-7234 or via email at CampGlenGray@aol.com. Tell us your name, which work day(s) and how to contact you. We need to know you're coming as we generally prepare food for everyone.
Oh, what a year it was! Led by the 'Dream Team', consisting of leader, Bob Brenneck OG '67, Jerry Murnane OG '07, Joe Pastore OG '67, Doug Morongell OG '07, and anchored by Drew Baumgardt, the 'glen' got a major facelift with the rehabilitation of Benedict Lodge. This project was 11 months in the making and proved to be rewarding as it was rededicated at the FOGG 'homecoming' on October 19, 2009. Others contributing to this major project were Pete Orrok OG '03, Brian Conner OG '06, Steve Bierach OG '99, and Randy Holden OG '76.
Just about every area in camp was attended to as we continue to upgrade our facilities for our guests and keep Uncle's dream alive for many more years to come. With the help of our newest Old Guard member, John Thompson OG '09, nine cabins in camp now have 134 wooden bunk beds rather than the old metal Army cots. From new roofs on the dining hall (all shingles donated by Mike Bell OG '07) and Gilwell Cabin (by sponsoring Troop 23 Bloomfield), to many Eagle Scout projects, like the railings on the bridge to Glen/Gray cabins, upgrades at both Augie Schroeder and McMullen Field of permanent BBQ grilles, wash stands, and new latrine roofs, a new storage shed at the dining hall, the residing of the Tool Shed, a new loading platform at the bed trailer, and refurbishing the interior of Channel Cabin, we keep improving the facilities. Continued projects by Brian Conner saw more gas lights, water heaters, and plumbing fixtures installed. Pete Orrok's work is never ending as our new porch railings, steps, rock wall, & walkway to headquarters, the new steps & railings at Mothercroft, among other projects, will attest. Pete, along with Drew and their friends, have started the major step in pouring new foundation tubes with concrete to stabilize the Old Guard Cabin.
The Beaver Days, led by Randy Holden, continues to draw small crowds to do a lot of the necessary 'evils' that the camp requires. Road repairs, ditch cleanouts, maintenance work, such as painting, all add up as we continue to improve the camp's appearance. The waterfront and summer camp setup are critical to our plans as it helps provide for one of our major revenues.
2010 has many projects being planned. The major ones in the works include a new water delivery system (replacing much of the 2" pvc piping which has kept everyone busy patching all year) and replacing the roof on Explorer Cabin (the last one needed).
For all those that physically and monetarily support our efforts, a 'BIG' THANK YOU! Without all of our volunteers, friends, and Eagle Scouts, we would not be able to provide such a 'beautiful camp close to home'. See you all in the 'glen' soon. Remember, 'many hands make for a lighter task for all hands'...come and lend yours:
