Take the path between the Dining Hall and the
brook, and walk towards Lake Vreeland. Named after
one of the founders of the camp, it was formed at
the junction of North and South Brooks when the
Kidde-Miller Dam was built. The above picture was
taken from the dam towards the water front area.
At the side of the lake is a bench where you can sit
and watch folks fish.
KIDDE - MILLER DAM - The dam was named for its two principal
engineers, Walter Kidde and Arthur B. Miller. Work began in
late spring of 1917, and the core wall was completed by December
of 1917. The inside of the dam was filled with stone. This was
accomplished by requiring each Scout to bring a stone for fill
as a payment for a swim. The Scouts continued to fill the dam
until 1925, when it was completed. The funding for the dam came
from many sources, including Mr. Kidde (Kidde Fire Extinguishers),
Joseph Van Vleck Jr. and Colonel Isaac Lewis (inventor of the
Lewis Machine Gun).
