The late Dr. John McMullen was a Boy Scout who spent summers at Camp
Glen Gray. He was an eminent naval architect and engineer. Along with
a lifetime of business achievements, he is best known as the man who brought
a hockey team from Colorado to NJ in 1982 and renamed them the NJ Devils.
He was also the owner of the Houston Astros from 1979 to 1993.
McMullen Field and leanto site was created to honor his memory. It contains
a covered leanto shelter (50' wide by 12' deep and open on three sides)
and an adjacent field for tenting and activities. It is located on the former
site of the camp's rifle range.
In warm weather, there is also running water. The site has picnic tables and a
fire pit. The nearest latrines are in Hawk Ridge tent site and the Augie Schroeder
site.
A Camp Story | |
In the early days of the camp, women were not allowed up into the camp. When mothers visited their Boy Scout sons, they sat in a small gazebo-like shelter called Mother's Pavillion located in the North corner of the parking lot near the spillway. Mother's Pavillion was constructed by Dr. McMullen and his father. Today, the compass rose from that building can be seen on the floor of the Nancy Gasser pavillion located between Explorer Cabin and Lake Vreeland. |
