Preserving Camp Glen Gray

Introduction

Camp Glen Gray is one of the oldest continuously operating Boy Scout camp in the nation and among the first camps specifically built as a Scout camp. Occupying a critical location in the Ramapo Highlands, Glen Gray is a pristine wilderness oasis amid the ever-expanding sprawl of northern New Jersey. Tens of thousands of boys have learned to camp, understand our environment, and most importantly, came to rely on themselves and one-another, on its varied terrain since 1917.

In January 2001, the Northern New Jersey Council of the Boy Scouts put Glen Gray up for sale. In response, a grass-roots volunteer organization sprung up from the 5,000 parents and scouts that use the camp in order to save Camp Glen Gray.

Ending 13 months of negotiations, the sale of Camp Glen Gray was officially completed on February 5, 2002, when the NNJC sold the 750 acres to the County of Bergen and the Trust for Public Land.  The core area of the camp—containing Lake Vreeland and approximately 20 buildings—will be endowed and maintained by the Friends of Glen Gray (FOGG), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Glen Gray for camping, environmental education and scouting activities through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and contributors.

About Us:
Friends of Glen Gray

The Friends of Glen Gray (FOGG), is a non-profit organization based in Montclair, N.J. Our aim is to preserve the camp for traditional camping and scouting activities. FOGG will expand the reach of the camp's nature and outdoor programs to a wider range of non-discriminatory youth programs in the region. We are coordinating our efforts with another volunteer association, The Old Guard of Camp Glen Gray, which has long provided promotion and preservation support for the camp.
