The program is prepared in good faith and could change.    Scouts who sign up for this event, need to know they must be prepared by having read the entire MB book beforehand, prepare the prerequisites as stated and bring their work with them to camp.  Please have them place all papers, prepared & signed blue card, MB book etc in a sturdy zip lock bag with their name and troop number  & town on everything.  Scouts without a blue card will be turned away from the session.  All Eagle required badges are offered as an introduction only.   The counselor will get them started on the badge on the right foot.   No Eagle required badge will be completed at camp.   Scouts with partials cannot be accommodated at this time, but we do wish to know ahead of time of your scouts’ needs as we will try to put them in contact with the counselors in question ahead of time.

Scouts who have just joined the troop should not be concentrating on badges but rather on rank advancement.  We are offering a unique program for these young scouts.  Only requirement is that they bring their scout book with them.

Scouts needing service hours for rank advancement and able adults willing to help camp may plan ahead of time to undertake any number tasks from painting/staining, trail or site maintenance, cleaning, rearranging a small rock wall, plumbing, general repair, etc.   Please state your wishes & number of participants.

Use this link to obtain workbooks on all offered merit badges:  http://www.meritbadge.com/worksheets/index.htm

All have been updated to current edition except Reading and Orienteering (as of 3/21/05)

* Astronomy:   A night event, meet at 4 PM for 45 min and again at 9:30 PM, weather permitting.

**  If your collection is fragile or valuable, please do not bring it to camp, but prepare a photo (or photocopy) album of it showing the details needed.

> Crime prevention:  must bring note on letterhead from facility you visited indicating your name, and date of your visit.   Note may be hand written & signed by officer on duty.

*** You must bring your own fishing pole, reel, tackle and bait.  You must know basic first aid for fishing type accidents and must bring your personal mini first aid kit (home made OK). You must know the knots taught in the merit badge book.   Practice beforehand.  Partials in this badge will be awarded if no fish are caught.   The fish that is cleaned and cooked may be a store bought whole fish.  Fish caught at GG may be kept for this purpose.  Otherwise, please release all your catches.

**** Journalism. Along with 1A they should have a write up along with some news clips from newspapers and magazines or for 1B they should have a write up on how a news story played on TV and Radio and they should have a print out of the front page of www.yahoo.com or www.Reuters.com

% Music:  For requirement 1, please email counselor,  Mike Sharples @  sharples@optonline.net with a reference to Music Merit Badge at Glen Gray.

>> Nature:  write out replies to 1,2,3 in workbook, and do 4 Birds B.   We will do Birds, Mammals, Reptiles & Amphibians, Mollusks and Plants at camp.  Bring loose leaf notebook for leaf collection.

^ Orienteering:  Must bring a baseplate compass, wristwatch (analog or digital)   All prerequisites done prior to fair must be signed off by the scoutmaster on each scout’s blue card.   For item 7, we will run one course in the afternoon, but they need a total of 3.   We will accept one of the three to be requirement 2 for First Class.

# Pioneering:  buy 50’ coil of 3/8” manila rope or equivalent (hardware store), cut a 40’ coil and whip ends.  Cut the remaining 10’ into 2 x 2’ pieces and 1 x 6’ piece for knot practice. Practice the knots with the 6’ piece of rope.   Bring all your rope to camp in a bag.  For requirement 1, practice and get good at it, so you can quickly demonstrate at camp.  #3, practice all 7 knots so you can demo them using your own rope.  #4, Use the 2 x 2’ pieces to make the splice requirements.  Show your work at camp.

+ Reading and Scholarship may be earned during the same time period (a twofer)

For Weather: Requirements 1-7 are explanation type requirements, so they need to read and be prepared to discuss any and all of those.  For requirements 8 and 9, They must do one of two things.
8A)  Tell them to make their wind vane, or anemometer, or rain gauge, or hygrometer, and use it to observe that aspect of the weather for one week
8B)  They must visit a National Weather Service office, or a Meteorology professor, or a local weather person, and find out the most dangerous kinds of weather in their community, and how severe weather warnings are transmitted to the public.
9A)  They must prepare a talk on weather, show the outline to the MB counselor, then give the talk.  Have them look up the topic in the book, or online.
9B)  They must prepare a talk based on a few articles, show the outline to the MB counselor, then give the talk.  Again, have them look up the topic in the book, or online.
